CHAUNCEY O.** (7)11 PEASE (ABEL** (6)10, EBENEZER** (5)9, CUMMINGS ** (4)8, ISAAC** (3)7, DEACON JOHN** (2)6, ROBERT** (1)5, ROBERT** (-1)4, JOHN** (-2)3, JOHN** (-3)2, ROBERT** (-4)1) was born September 26, 1825 in GEORGIA, FRANKLIN CO., VT, and died 1886 in RICHMOND TP., OSCEOLA CO., MICHIGAN. He married (1) ARVILLA E.**(2) ADAMS January 01, 1849 in STOCKHOLM, ST. LAWRENCE, NY, daughter of GEORGE ADAMS and SABRA** STREETER. She was born February 10, 1830 in STOCKHOLM, ST. LAWRENCE CO., NEW YORK, and died July 21, 1883 in NASHUA, HILLSBORO CO., NH (53 YRS.). He met (2) EMMA WARNEKE Aft. 1873. She was born Abt. 1853 in NEW YORK, and died in Father born Canada, Mother born New York.

Notes for CHAUNCEY O.** (7) PEASE:

Chauncey was born at Georgia, Vermont. In 1849 he married Arvilla Adams, daughter of George Washington Adams and Sabra Streeter. They first settled in Lawrence, NY and then later lived in Brookdale, NY. Chauncey and Arvilla were divorced 15 August 1877. He moved to Reed City, Osceola Co., Michigan between 1873-1880. In 1884 he bought land as a "single" man. He died on his property in Richmond Tp., Osceola Co., Michigan a little north of Reed City in 1886 and is buried in the Woodland Cemetery, Reed City. Also buried on this lot are George Owen Pease, his grandson, and his granddaughter and her husband, Jessie May (Pease) and Lewis DeVoe. Arvilla married Percival Sprague and is buried in Nashua, New Hampshire with her son and his wife, Nelson and Lillian Pease.

1850, 1860, 1870 listed in St. Lawrence Co., NY - Lawrence, then later Stockholm.

1880 census listed in Reed City, MI with Emma Warneke and two sons, Andrew and Abel. Evidently, Emma, Andrew and Abel had moved elsewhere by 1884.

Chauncey served in the Civil War at Gettysburg, etc. Chauncey applied for a pension but died before anything was done.

Several years ago (2002) when I was checking his war record at the Library of Congress, I found a note written in 1950 to the government asking if there was any pension due Chauncey for his war service and it was signed by his son, Arthur Pease of Algona, Washington. Evidently, Andrew or Abel went by the name of Arthur.

We visited Washington State in 2000 and tried to find a connection to Arthur Pease but were unable to. I wrote letters to the 'Pease' that live in the area and we checked all the local cemeteries to see if we could find some information but were unable to.

GEORGE LINCOLN** (8)12 PEASE (CHAUNCEY O.** (7)11, ABEL** (6)10, EBENEZER** (5)9, CUMMINGS ** (4)8, ISAAC** (3)7, DEACON JOHN** (2)6, ROBERT** (1)5, ROBERT** (-1)4, JOHN** (-2)3, JOHN** (-3)2, ROBERT** (-4)1) was born October 30, 1859 in BROOKDALE, ST. LAWRENCE CO., NEW YORK, and died May 16, 1948 in JONESBORO, ARKANSAS. He married CARRIE ELIZABETH CHASE March 10, 1883 in REED CITY, OSCEOLA CO., MICHIGAN. She was born November 02, 1866 in MIDDLEBRANCH TP., OSCEOLA CO., MICHIGAN, the daughter of Uriah Owen CHASE and Mary Ann HUNTER, and died June 16, 1962 in SIKESTON, MISSOURI.

Notes for GEORGE LINCOLN** (8) PEASE:

George Lincoln Pease was born in Brookdale, St. Lawrence Co., NY. His early years were spent there. Later, his mother divorced his father and they moved to Nashua, NH.

He came to Osceola Co., Michigan where his father, Chauncey, was living. He met and married Carrie Elizabeth Chase, the daughter of Uriah Owen Chase and Mary Ann Hunter.

Due to his mother being ill, they returned to Nashua, NH and cared for her until her death. Their oldest child, Marion, was born there in 1886. His father died in 1886 and they returned to Richmond Tp., Osceola Co., MI to take possession of his property. They farmed for many years.

George and Carrie were separated and Carrie and the unmarried children lived in Reed City whil George remained on the farm.

Arkansas was advertising itself as the 'Land of Opportunity' in an effort to get people to come there. It proved to be difficult land. There is a lot of rock and poor soil and some of the land is red clay. In 1913 Carrie and all of her family except her daughter, Jessie, moved to Arkansas in the hopes of getting land and having better opportunities for her sons and son-in-law. Jessie and her family were already living in Springfield, MO.

George Lincoln still lived on the farm and, eventually, Jessie, Lewis and their two children, Freeman and Marge moved back to live with him.

While staying at Corning, Arkansas, Floyd died of a liver ailment. There is a picture of Nelson, Owen, and Floyd when in the Spring of 1912 the dam went out. They are pictured by the water. This was probably one of the few pictures of these brothers. They soon moved to Maynard, Arkansas where they obtained land and lived for many years. At the time that Florence and Eula were ill with the flu, it was very difficult to find a spot to dig graves. By the time one of the girls was buried, the other one had died. The land belonged to their neighbors, the Jarrett's and is still called the Jarrett Cemetery today. Mother and I stopped to visit the Jarrett's in 1973. They were both ailing and Mrs. Jarrett said, "The next time you come, you'll probably find us buried in the cemetery". The only thing left of the old Pease house was a part of the chimney. There was brush and small trees all around. Jack and I visited there again in 1999 and it has completely changed. The road is entirely different and there is a tar road right next to the cemetery. There is a new home where the old Pease property was.

George would visit the family occasionally and while visiting in 1948, when he was hospitalized at Jonesboro's St. Bernard's Hospital for seven days with uremia and cardio-vascular heart disease. He died and is buried in the Jarrett Cemetery where many of the family are buried.

Carrie, called 'Grandma' by the northern grandchildren and called 'Mimi' by the southern grandchildren, lived with her two sons, Murry and Nelson, and died at Sikeston, MO in 1962. She is buried with her family in the Jarrett Cemetery.

Lewis lived in the Sears, Michigan and met Jessie when she taught school in Sears. She went to Evart Normal School Lewis worked for the railroad for many years. He was forced to retire due to suffering a sun-stroke.

They lived in Springfield, Missouri for a number of years where both of their children were born. Later, they returned to Reed City and lived on the Pease farm with her father, George L. Pease.

For a time they ran an ice cream store in Reed City.

During World War II, they operated a gas station, grocery store in Holdenville. It no longer exists - was located about a mile north of Reed City on old US-131. The building was later used as a A & W Root Beer Stand.

Later, Jesse and Lewis lived in a house south of the grocery store and then their son, Freeman, bought this house and they moved into one of the cabins that was on the property where she remained after Lewis died until her own death at the age of 89 years.

Then in the fall of 1914, they decided to move to Arkansas - "The Land of Opportunity". They had some rough years - rented property for many years before they were able to purchase their own. Nelt, Grandma "Mimi", Murray and his family, always lived together. He was a kind, gentle man and loved by all who knew him. He is buried next to his mother, which was his wish, in Jarrett Cemetery, Maynard, AR. He gave his half of the farm to Murray's children. Von owns most of the land and lives there now (1999).

February 23, 1985, ALLENDALE NH, OTTA, MI; Res-40 yrs. in Grand Rapids area.

Notes for GEORGE "OWEN" (9) PEASE:

Owen Pease was born in Richmond Tp., Oseola Co., MI. He attended Holdenville and Reed City Public Schools. He worked before and after school in a local lumber yard. He was in the tenth grade when the family decided to go to Arkansas to purchase land. He worked at a lumber camp there and received a nickle which he saved for six months before spending it.

He joined the U.S. Army in WWI and was at Camp Devens near Cambridge, Massachusetts during the flu epidemic in the winter of 1919-1920. Those who were not ill were on the burial detail. Of the 5,000 at the camp, about 3,000 had the flu. After being discharged, he reenlisted for another year and was a Sargent at the time of his second discharge.

Owen was a good carpenter and brick and stone layer. He did the stone work for the garage on the Pease family farm north of Reed City. The are was called, "Pease Road". He also helped put brick on a church near Maynard, Arkansas.

He returned to Michigan, probably living with his father on the farm for a time. He worked in the car factories in Flint and Lansing. The work was usually for six months of the year and then there were layoffs for the remainder.

In 1931 he married Lucile Dempkey and they lived in Reed City. Two of the places were Fred Earnest's house near the tie plant and they bought a home at 410 West Fifth Avenue and resided there for about six years. He worked at the tie plant for a time and then when WWII began, he worked in a factory in Dretroit for one winter and then worked in the oil fields near Reed City until about 1946 when he moved to the Missouri area. He worked on boats on the Mississippi River for a time.

Owen and Lucile were divorced in 1945. He died in St. Louis, MO and was brought back to Reed City for burial on the Pease family plot beside his grandfather, Chauncey Pease, and his sister and her husband, Jessie and Lewis DeVoe.

Owen and Lucile had two children: Donald Eugene Derald and Evelyn Mae.

Lucile was born near Devil's Lake in Newaygo County, the daughter of William John Dempkey and Clara "Ruth" Granger. When she was about 5 years old, the family moved to Big Rapids, MI near her Granger grandparents. Her father had pneumonia and she lived with Harley and Lida Derby and her sister, Laura, lived with her Granger grandparents until he was well. Lucile went to kindergarten in Big Rapids and then the family moved to Reed City, 510 Decalb St. where they remained. Lucile graduated from high school and worked in Lansing at the capital building until there were layoffs due to the depression. Later, she worked in the Oldsmobile plant in Lansing and then went home when there was no work.

During WWII she worked in a factory in Detroit in 1942-1943 then came back to Reed City for the summer. She and her daughter, Evelyn, moved to Grand Rapids and she eventually got a job with Saginaw Steering Gears working on bushings for airplane motors. This company was bought by General Motors and called Diesel Equipment and she worked for this company for 26 years before retiring in 1968.

Her second marriage was to Elmer Andrew Lynch who was born 3 January 1910 at Rosebush, MI. Elmer was brought up in an Irish Catholic family. He served in the U. S. Army in WWII and was in Italy for part of that time. He was employed at Fisher Body Plant #1 for many years after the war until he had a stroke in 1967 and had to retire early. They bought a house on Hillcroft in Wyoming, Michigan and lived there all their married life. Elmer died 3 June 1973 at Kent Community Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI.

Lucile remained active in the retirees union and enjoyed traveling to different countries and throughout the United States. She visited all of the states except Alaska. She enjoyed her 3 grandsons, Dick and Rog Kremers and Deron Pease, and her two great grandchildren, Sheri and Marc Kremers, and was looking forward to the birth of the third great grandchild, Jonathan Kremers, when she died.

Owen and Lucile had two children: Donald Eugene Derald and Evelyn Mae.

Generation No. 1

Nelt was the oldest son of George and Carrie (Chase) Pease. In 1913 Nelt, his siblings and mother moved to DeKalb Street in Reed City.

Notes for EVELYN MAE (10) PEASE:

Evelyn Mae Pease, the daughter of George "Owen" and Mildred "Lucile" (Dempkey) Pease, was born in Reed City, Michigan in 1932. According to her mother, she had just walked downtown (I wasn't due for two weeks) and had arrived home just in time to welcome me into the world. I am not sure about being "early" as I was 18 inches long and 10 pounds heavy. I hope the scales were off that day.

I lived in Reed City, surrounded by my families on both sides, for the first ten years of my life. I remember visiting Grandpa Pease's farm and being able to wander anywhere we wanted to picking wild flowers in the spring on the neighbor's farm; going berry picking; sliding down the big hill in the winter on the "Pease Road"; playing Flinch around the big kitchen table by lamplight; hearing the phone ring, 'two long, one short', and everybody listening into each others calls; doing everything at the farm by lamplight; playing checkers with Grandpa and his laugh when he beat us; and much more - it was a special time for a child.

We were living in the house on "Fifth Avenue" when we had electricity put in. The meter was inside the house in the living room right over the couch. I remember listening to Gene Autry, Gracie and George Burns, Fibber McGee and Molly, etc. on our radio. We would sit on straightback chairs in front of the radio on Sunday night.

Our summers were spent playing with our friends, playing ball and so forth but I remember the times, when Mom probably was glad to have us gone for part of a day, when we walked the rails down to the dump and looked for goodies and visited our relatives at the cemetery (no vandalism then). We would check out all of the graves. Memorial Day when we walked downt the two-lane dirt road to the cemetery from the grade school building with our flags. Aunt Jessie DeVoe was the speaker one year at the Memorial Day services. The school was another place we visited - the swings, the may pole, etc. There was a building that was started (something to do with WWI) near our house and never finished and that was fun to explore; the 'tourist park' where we could wander around or go fishing off the point; or go fishing in the creek just the other side. The carefree days!!

My Mom and I lived in Detroit one year, just off Trumbull Avenue, what a difference from a small town!

We lived in several places the first year in Grand Rapids. I went to four differnet schools in one semester. Finally, on the fifth and sixth try we were in the same school district and I went to South High School from the seventh through the twelfth grades and attended Central High School for three summers and graduated a year ahead of my class. I worked at the Grant store downtonw and then worked for Michigan Bell for a time.

I took accounting classes for a year at Grand Rapids Community College and painting classes at the community college and Aquinas College.

In 1951, I married Harm Kremers at Hope Christian Reformed Church in Grandville, MI, who was in the U. S. Army at the time and spent a few weeks in Atlanta, GA before he went to Germany.

Then I worked for Socony-Vacuum in the office for a time. My two sons were born during this time when we lived south of Grand Rapids.

Later, we moved near Hudsonville, MI and I worked as a receptionist-nurse's aide for Dr. Jerry Bulthuis in Jamestown, MI and enjoyed it very much.

My divorce took place during this time, 1969-1970, and I went to work at Casey Woodwyk, Inc., a wholesale produce company, in the office. This is where I met my husband, Jack Sawyer. Jack was a onion farmer, the son of John and Marguerite "Peg" (Boldt) Sawyer.

This is where I got started in genealogy with his family as they have been in this area since the mid 1860's. After I worked on his a while, my Mom got me interested in working on my own family. It has been frustrating at times but mostly enjoyable and has allowed me to meet some of my extended family that I wouldn't otherwise have known.

Jack and I were married at the Hudsonville Congregation United Church of Christ and we continue to belong to that church family. I have been financial secretary, a deaconess and am currently treasurer of the mission board and the women's fellowship but the most enjoyable thing I do in church is being in the choir.

Jack worked with his father and brothers on their farm raising celery, onions and spring flowers. At the last due to mechanization, he raised only onions and retired in 1989. Jack's father died shortly before we were married and we bought the house. Jack was born in the first house at this location but it was destroyed in the 1956 tornado that struck this area. His parents rebuilt and this is where we live now.

We have four grandchildren, 'Our Jewels'. We have a motor home and took them camping for a number of years. We enjoy travelling throughout the country and have made several trips to Europe. Jack enjoys golf and working with wood on different projects. I enjoy quilting and have been on the board of the Western Michigan Genealogical Society for almost 20 years.
